A Sibling Showdown: Changing Baby Names and Drama Unmasked

A Sibling Showdown: Changing Baby Names and Drama Unmasked

Ah, family. You can’t live with ’em, you can’t survive without ’em. This juicy story plucked directly from the hallowed halls of Reddit involves an ambitious sister, an unfiltered boyfriend, and a baby name that could be any foodie’s dream—or nightmare. Buckle up, folks! This is gonna be one wild ride.

The Grand Name Revelation

So here’s the setup: the protagonist (let’s call her Emma) is minding her own business, sipping her tea, when bam! Her little sister (bless her teenage heart) drops the bomb—she’s pregnant and they’ve already picked out names! Tyler for a boy, hopelessly predictable and named after the father, and Savery for a girl. Yes, you read that right: Savery, pronounced “savory.” Cue the collective neighborly wince.

Now, I’ve heard of unique names, but naming your precious bundle of joy after a flavor note? Honey, that’s a bold move. You’d think a Gordon Ramsay critique was in order, but Emma, being the sweet sister she is, congratulates her sibling and lets it slide. For the moment.

The Art of Persuasion

Our gentle narrator wants to save her future niece from years of playground humiliation and culinary confusion, but her sister’s untreated BPD means any direct criticism could detonate like a Fourth of July firework fiesta. Emma, consumed by concern and armed with subtlety, begins her strategic mission.

She gets crafty! She gifts her sister their mom’s favored baby name book, the one that yielded both Emma’s and her sister’s (decidedly non-flavorful) names. They sift through it together, munching on snacks like this was a casual Netflix binge. Emma drops her concerns gently, like a tennis ball into a fabulous Birkin bag. Her sister, with memories of their own school torment, starts to rethink her original “savory” idea. Hallelujah!

Victory: Margo

After weeks of invoking Pinterest lists and cute name suggestions—think Emma becoming a baby-naming ninja—her sister finally declares a name that stands the test of, well, sensibility: Margo. Can you hear the collective sigh of relief from readers everywhere?

Emma, basking in her triumph, is quickly thrust into another plot twist. Sister’s boyfriend, previously as present as peace in the Kardashian household, unleashes his rage via text. He chose the name Savery and is less than thrilled about Emma’s influence over “his” family. Oh, sweetheart, the tea is practically boiling over now.

The Digital Duel

Now, nobody loves a good ol’ family spat more than Redditors. The boyfriend’s text tirade includes some colorful insults, lambasting Emma’s single status as if that’s relevant. Emma fires back with, let’s face it, an epic line: “I didn’t try to name my daughter after a literal piece of meat.” Oh, snap! The boyfriend’s ego? Shattered like fine china at a cow tipping contest.

But hold on! The saga isn’t quite over. Emma’s sister is furious—not about the potential name-flop, but at Emma for her spicy retort to the boyfriend. Sisters, am I right? They can’t see a hero when one’s right in front of them. Emma’s good deed is in jeopardy of going unappreciated, and that’s the real travesty here.

Roger’s Final Take

Alright, gather ’round folks: it’s time for some wisdom from dear old Roger. Let’s get one thing straight. If you’re still reading—first of all, kisses from Roger, you delightful human—you’re probably thinking Emma is a hero. I couldn’t agree more. Sweetheart, she saved a child from a lifetime of moniker misfortune. That sort of sibling intervention deserves an award, not a berating.

Emma handled it with subtlety and love, even when it meant playing Babysitter’s Club with a sister who has BPD. Hellooo, patience and diplomacy! The boyfriend, bless his perpetually absent heart, needs to chill out—it’s called co-parenting, not dictatorship. Newsflash: your sister-in-law’s opinion matters! It’s family. We’re here to support and, occasionally, rescue you from bad decisions.

And a final note for our Reddit hero: Don’t let this little hiccup dim your shining moment. You, Emma, are a knight in verbally glittering armor. Hang on to that! And if they’re smart, they’ll come around and thank you eventually. Even if they don’t, you’ve got the internet rallied behind you. Just think of us as your virtual squad, ever ready to back a sensible sister. Cheers to that!

Until next time, darlings! Remember, keep your families close and your friends closer… especially if they’re helping you avoid baby name fiascos.

Original story

This is my first time posting on Reddit after a long time lurking. On mobile, so sorry for any typos.

My sister (19f) announced to the family that she and her boyfriend were pregnant a few months ago. She immediately followed it up with the names she’d chosen: Tyler is it was a boy (after the father), or Savery if it was a girl (pronounced “savory”).

Apparently she liked the name Avery, but wanted to make it unique, hence the extra letter. Obviously, this is a terrible name for a baby, and I politely asked if they were considering any other names.

She said no, that they’d already decided. My sister and I aren’t really close, so I decided to let it be and congratulated her.

A while later, my sister announced that they were definitely having a girl, and that little Savery was healthy so far. At this point, I’d decided to become more involved with my sister, since this was going to be my first niece or nephew.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about the poor kid getting teased for her name. My sister has untreated BPD and any direct challenge to her decisions always escalates to a huge blowout, so I had to play my cards carefully.

I got her a specific baby name book from my mom, the very same book our mom had gotten both of our names from. She loved this gift and we spent all night eating snacks and going through it.

That night, I opened up about my concerns for the name she’d chosen and the bullying that might come from it, which she was receptive to, because we’d both been bullied in school. Over the next few weeks, I said things like, “Oh, this would be a cute name” or “I saw the coolest list of names on Pinterest.

” My sister loved some of the names and finally, after all of that, she announced that she had settled on the name “Margo” instead, taken from the baby name book. I was overjoyed at having saved my niece from a life of being named the way someone would describe a steak.

Shortly afterwards I got a text from my sister’s boyfriend, who I didn’t really know at all because he was never home when I was there, calling me all sorts of terrible things for getting involved in his family. I asked what he was talking about and he continued to cuss me out because he chose the name Savery and I had no right to change it.

I pointed out that I was only interested in the well-being of my niece and that my sister was my family, so I had a right to an opinion. This man had the nerve to tell me that I was an idiot, that I didn’t know anything about family since I was still single despite being older than both of them.

I pointed out that I clearly wasn’t the dumbest one in the conversation, since I didn’t try to name my daughter after a literal piece of meat. Now my sister is angry at me for getting involved and calling her boyfriend stupid, even though he said much more hurtful things in his texts to me.

AITA?
